NordAqua will largely rely on the abundance and diversity of Nordic cyanobacteria and algae, which provide great opportunity for advancing research applicable to the Nordic blue bioeconomy.
One of the aims of NordAqua is to combine existing culture collections of Finland, Sweden, and Norway under the same umbrella and to create the Nordic Culture collection database. The NordAqua culture collection will include more than 2000 different species and strains isolated from Nordic environment.
High-throughput screening of the collection will allow the identification and subsequent mass production of novel fine chemicals with tested bioactivity. The aquatic photoautotrophs under the Nordic umbrella will serve as a template for rational design of cell factories and biorefineries with 'superior' productivity.
